Creating a Halloween Seasonal Table

Ah Waldorf seasonal tables…the reason I started exploring this pedagogy in the first place. What a lovely way to reflect the rhythm of the year, the changing of the seasons, in a way that your children can see and appreciate on a day to day basis. Your little one can bring in treasures from a walk outside and over time, develop a reverence or appreciation for the natural world.

I set this bad boy up at the very beginning of October. I’m a late blogger. I have things done way ahead of time with big plans to get ahead of my self imposed publishing schedule. And yet, I’m down to the wire…

Somehow, the entire weekend has gotten away from me and I am racing to get this to the presses in time for you to actually care about seeing it. Of course, there’s always the chance that you stumbled upon this article during all the other months that aren’t October. In either case…

LET’S GET SPOOKY!

One day, I’ll be the type of blogger who gets the wrinkles out of her playsilks before taking a photo. Today is not that day.

What burgeoning little witch would try to cast a spell without a cauldron? I hate buying toys that we will never use again, so I loved discovering that Bella Luna carries these marvelous Bolga baskets. Add in some Grapat mandala pieces from Happy Monkey or Rose and Rex and you have some amazing concoctions!

Give me eye of newt, tongue of snakes, the slither of a snail, and the hoot of an owl! Even the most innocuous Holztiger animal has a new twist when a magic wand is involved. Happy Monkey is my favorite place for Holztiger. The cards are from a lovely indie store called Painted & Pine. The magic wand is from the best Etsy store across the pond at Tilly Tabby Toys. The card holder was lovingly made by Karah over at OliveYouandLou.

Any witch worth her salt needs some standard tools: an open flame, as well as a mortar and pestle. Luckily, PoppyBabyCo has you covered. Both are made lovingly by hand, and it shows in the detail and craftsmanship. We use the mortar and pestle for pretend play, as well as practical life applications.

Ironically, two out of three of these goodies did not even make it into the actual shot. It’s because my daughter actually sleeps with her little witch and her magic wand. However, all three of these goodies heavily figure into our pretend play lately. Check out Tilly Tabby for your very own little witch!

But really, I know Halloween 2020 is starting to look way different than we planned on. It’s just another box to check off on the “Ways COVID wrecked 2020 for our children” list. But don’t lose heart momma – we’re in it together. They won’t remember this one-off year. And it will get better.
